Discover Don Matias Parrilla

If you’re strolling along the lively stretch of Avenida Praia de Ponta Negra and the scent of charcoal-grilled meat suddenly makes you slow down, chances are you’ve arrived at Don Matias Parrilla. Located at Av. Praia de Ponta Negra, 8888 - Ponta Negra, Natal - RN, 59082-000, Brazil, this Argentine-style steakhouse has quietly built a reputation among locals and tourists who crave a proper parrilla experience by the beach.

The first time I visited, it was on a humid Friday evening after watching the sunset over Morro do Careca. The dining room felt warm and inviting, with rustic wooden tables and an open grill that immediately caught my attention. You can actually see the grill master managing the flames, adjusting the embers, and turning thick cuts of beef with steady precision. That hands-on process matters. According to the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (ABRASEL), restaurants that emphasize visible preparation and ingredient transparency tend to earn higher customer trust and repeat visits. Watching the meat sear over natural charcoal adds a level of confidence you don’t get everywhere.

The menu is centered around classic parrilla techniques. Think bife de chorizo, ancho steak, picanha, and pork ribs cooked slowly to retain their juices. When I ordered the chorizo steak, the waiter explained the cut, its marbling, and the ideal doneness for maximum tenderness. That small detail reflected genuine product knowledge. The steak arrived with a perfectly caramelized crust and a pink, juicy center-exactly what you expect from a serious grill house. Paired with chimichurri and a side of crispy fries, it delivered bold flavor without unnecessary frills.

Seafood lovers aren’t left out either. Being in Natal, freshness is key. I tried the grilled shrimp on a separate visit, and it was clear the kitchen respects local sourcing. The texture was firm yet delicate, seasoned simply to highlight natural sweetness. Research from Brazil’s Ministry of Fisheries consistently shows that coastal cities like Natal benefit from same-day seafood supply chains, which directly impact flavor and food safety. You can taste that difference here.

Service plays a major role in the overall experience. Staff members are attentive without hovering. During my last dinner, our server suggested a Malbec to complement the steak. That pairing wasn’t random; Argentine wines are traditionally matched with parrilla cuts because their tannins balance rich, fatty meat. It’s a classic culinary principle often recommended by sommeliers worldwide. The recommendation worked beautifully, elevating the entire meal.

Reviews across travel platforms frequently highlight the generous portions and fair pricing for the location. Considering it sits in the heart of Ponta Negra, a neighborhood known for tourism and beachfront activity, the value feels honest. You’re paying for quality meat, skilled grilling, and a relaxed yet polished atmosphere. Still, like any busy restaurant in a popular area, peak hours can mean a short wait. Reservations are a smart move, especially on weekends.

Cleanliness and organization also stand out. Tables are promptly reset, and the open kitchen area looks well maintained. Food safety and hygiene are non-negotiable in today’s dining landscape, and establishments that consistently uphold those standards earn long-term credibility. While I can’t speak to every internal procedure, the visible care in handling and presentation suggests strong operational management.

What keeps people coming back isn’t just the steaks; it’s the full dining rhythm. You start with grilled provolone or empanadas, move into a hearty main course, sip wine slowly, and finish with a simple dessert like flan or dulce de leche. The pace encourages conversation and lingering, which feels right for a beachside evening in Natal.

Whether you’re a visitor exploring Rio Grande do Norte or a local looking for a dependable grill house, this spot delivers a satisfying balance of flavor, atmosphere, and professionalism. The combination of well-executed parrilla techniques, knowledgeable service, and prime location makes it a standout among restaurants in Ponta Negra.

  • Excellent place to have dinner! The food is amazing and the price is reasonable. They have an executive menu for $38 reales that is very convinient. We loved the food, especially the meat and the sides. Our favorites were the entraña and the grilled vegetables. The service is fast and the staff is super nice.

  • Amazing food, super large portions. I ordered a half portion of shrimp risotto and it was quite abundant for a normal person. My brothet and wife ordered a normal portion of beef and we have left overs!

  • Everything was amazing, food delicious, service was faultless. The ONLY thing that let it down was the male toilets, they looked like they needed a clean, the cubicle toilet seat was broken and one urinal was out of order. I'd highly recommend this to be fixed to make it the 5 star restaurant it deserves.
